Smile
There comes a time in all of our lives when a "SMILE" is called for...or when something is captured on short film, in writing or a photograph which Brings Delight to Young and Old Alike...
From Time to Time California Skywatch will make a Smile available to you, from anonymous or other sources... Brief interludes which have delighted us with their thoughts, photographs or films. Or someone will write a poem or a song. We hope that you enjoy them.
Thank you everybody for your help and friendship. Rosalind Peterson will not update or maintain the websites in the future. In days of heavy times ahead, each of us must act and not become complacent. Moaning and complaining is not the answer. Rosalind Peterson

“OLD RANCHER”
Author Unknown - 2009
A California Department of Water Resources representative stopped at an old, well run ranch, and spoke with the old rancher who owned the ranch.
The water representative told the rancher: “I need to inspect your ranch for your water allocation.”
The old rancher acquiesced, as he pointed to his left: “OK, but don’t go into that field over there.”
The water representative said: “Mister, I have the authority of the Federal Government behind me!”
He held up his card and said: “See this card? This card means I am allowed to go wherever I wish, on any agriculture land, with no questions asked or answered! Have I made myself clear? Do you understand?”
The old rancher nodded politely and went about his chores. Later, the rancher heard loud screams and saw the water representative running for the fence. Close behind was the rancher’s bull who was gaining ground on the water representative with every step.
The water representative was clearly terrified, so the old rancher immediately threw down his tools and ran to the fence where he shouted out: “Your card, your card! Show him your card!”
Later the Rancher was heard to mutter to himself: "If only we had more bulls."

SKY PILOTS FLYING ON HIGH - Author Unknown
“And who is here on the ground
Experimenting on Your Weather from low and high?
And who’s around
Protecting Agriculture from Pilots in the Sky?
Republicans, Independents & Democrats in the Senate
Decide who gets Your Water or the Sun.
They vote your Tax Dollars in the next minute
They Decide who will Benefit… And who will Starve by Loss of the Ton.
Which Sky Pilot is Flying across Our Land
Delivering changing Weather and Pollution…
While Dimming the Sun that touches our Trees and Crops…
And changing the Growing cycles upon which we depend?
And who is here on the Ground sending Chemicals & Particles
Into the air to Pollute or change your Weather?
Does the Sky Pilot care about Your Health,
The Bees, Trees, Water or Crops…
Or is he Paid to Change the Weather and Our Skies to Benefit another?
Whose Monetary Voice is Drifting across our Land
Renewed like Persistent Contrails in the air?
Who is Protecting our Air and Watersheds…
While Lobby Money takes Crop Production and Trees
Placing them on the Chopping Block?
Which Sky Pilot is Making Man-made clouds today?
Who Told him it was Safe?
Who gave him the Right without Our Consent?
Who Hired him for these Missions on High?
Where are the Deep Blue Skies and the Sun Today...
To Kiss the ground and bring Life on Earth?
Why the haze that Obscures the Sun…
And why no Stars and Blue Skies on High?
Looking up in dismay,
We see no deep, clear Blue Skies today…
Only Persistent Contrails and White Haze,
Renewed by Sky Pilots each day.
It is us Here on the Ground
Rising up to say, “No more Experiments today!”

BUM
by W. Dayton Wegefarth
He's a little dog, with a stubby tail,
and a moth-eaten coat of tan;
And his is legs are short, of the wabbly sort:
I doubt if they ever ran;
And he howls at night,
while in broad daylight he sleeps like a bloomin' log,
And he likes the feed of the gutter breed ;
he's a most irregular dog.
I call him Bum, and in total sum he's all that his name implies,
For he's just a tramp with a highway stamp that
culture cannot disguise;
And his friends, I've found, in the streets abound, be they urchins or dogs or men;
Yet he sticks to me with a fiendish glee
it's truly beyond my ken.
I talk to him when I'm lonesome-like, and I'm sure
that he understands
When he looks at me so attentively and gently licks my hands.
Then he rubs his nose on my tailored clothes, but
I never say aught thereat,
For the good Lord knows I can buy more clothes,
but never a friend like that!
So my good old pal, my irregular dog,
my flea-bitten, stub-tailed friend,
Has become a part of my very heart, to be
cherished till lifetime ends.
And on Judgment-day, if I take the way
that leads where the righteous meet,
If my dog is barred by the heavenly guard
we'll both of us brave the heat!

MONTANA COWBOY
Author Unknown
A Montana cowboy was overseeing his herd in a remote mountainous pasture when suddenly a brand-new BMW advanced out of a dust cloud towards him.
The driver, a young man in a Brioni suit, Gucci shoes, Ray Ban Sunglasses and YSL tie, leans out the window and asks the cowboy, “If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, Will you give me a calf?”
The cowboy looks at the man, then looks at his peacefully grazing animals and calmly answers, “Sure, why not?”
The young man parks his car, whips out his Dell notebook computer, connects it to his Cingular RAZR V3 cell phone, and surfs to a NASA Page on the Internet, where he calls up a GPS Satellite Navigation System to get an exact fix on his location, which he then feeds to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo.
The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exports it to an image processing facility in Hamburg, Germany. Within seconds, he receives an email on his Palm Pilot that the image has been processed and the data stored.
He then accesses a MS-SQL database through an ODBC connected Excel Spreadsheet with email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, receives a response.
Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi-tech, miniaturized HP LaserJet printer and finally turns to the cowboy and says, “You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves.”
“That’s Right. Well, I guess you can take one of my calves,” say the Cowboy.
He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on amused as the young man stuffs it into the back seat of his car.
Then the cowboy says to the young man, “Hey mister, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my calf?”
The young man thinks about it for a second and then says, “Yes, if you are correct.”
“You work for the U.S Government.” says the cowboy.
“Wow! That's correct,' says the young man. How did you guess that?”
“No guessing was required.” answered the cowboy. “You showed up here even though nobody called you. You wanted to get paid for an answer I already knew; to a question I never asked. You tried to show me how much smarter than me you are even though you don't know a thing about cows. This is not a herd of cattle, it is a flock of sheep. Now give me back my dog!”

Seattle dog's rush hour ride: on the bus, by herself, weekly
By Lindsay Cohen
January 12, 2015 at 6:29 PM PST Last Updated: Jan 14, 2015 at 8:53 PM PST
"...SEATTLE -- Public transit in Seattle has gone to the dogs. Commuters in Belltown report seeing a Black Labrador riding the bus alone in recent weeks. The 2-year old has been spotted roaming the aisles, hopping onto seats next to strangers, and even doing her part to clean the bus -- by licking her surroundings.
"All the bus drivers know her. She sits here just like a person does," said commuter Tiona Rainwater, as she rode the bus through downtown Monday. "She makes everybody happy. How could you not love this thing?" When the dog got off the bus - without an owner - at a dog park last week, it piqued the curiosity of local radio host Miles Montgomery of KISW-FM.
"It doesn't really appear to have an owner. The dog gets off at the dog park. I just look out the window and I'm like, 'did that just happen?'" Montgomery asked. "She was most concerned about seeing out the window, and I couldn't figure out what that was. It was really just about seeing where her stop was." Turns out the dog, Eclipse, doesn't always ride the bus alone. She visits the dog park a few times a week, sometimes with her owner.
The duo lives right near the bus stop at 3 Ave. W. and W. Mercer Street. Eclipse's solo rush hour ride happened one day when her owner took too long to finish a cigarette. "We get separated. She gets on the bus without me, and I catch up with her at the dog park," said Jeff Young, who owns the dog. "It's not hard to get on. She gets on in front of her house and she gets off at the dog park, three or four stops later." Young said the tradition has been going on for a while.
"She's been here the last two years, so she's been urbanized, totally. She's a bus-riding, sidewalk-walking dog," he said. "Probably once a week I get a phone call. 'Hi. I have your dog Eclipse here on 3rd and Bell,'" he recounted. "I have to tell them, 'no. She's fine.' She knows what she's doing." A spokesman for Metro Transit said the agency loves that a dog appreciates public transit.
"She would be much safer in the world if she had her owner on a leash," he joked. "It makes their day," added Young. "It's a good part of their day and it works out for her so I just let it go."
Portland, good-weird, honors old airport carpet with selfies, beer, parade
Rachel Maddow salutes the city of Portland, Oregon for being weird in a good way for their unusual sentimentality over the old carpet at PDX airport, with locals taking selfies with the carpet, naming a beer for it and making it grand marshal of a parade.
